ACRE seeks input from community groups

During the next two years, Saskatchewan's Action Committee on the Rural Economy (ACRE) members will be talking with groups and individuals across the province to garner ideas for revitalizing rural Saskatchewan. Consultations are a key part of their goal to develop a long-term vision for sustainable rural economic development.

"ACRE will provide advice and recommendations to the government on strategies, programs and services to enhance rural opportunities and increase the competitiveness of our products, both domestically and internationally," says Audrey Horkoff, a Kamsack producer and community leader, who co-chairs ACRE with Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food Minster Clay Serby.

Numerous rural interests are represented on ACRE, which draws its membership from farm organizations, community economic development organizations, the business community and other groups involved in the rural economy.

Members have been designated to work on eight specific action areas. Five of the sub-committees are focusing on economic sectors including agriculture, agri-value, resources, rural manufacturing and construction, and rural service. Two other sub-committees are looking at the future of farms and communities, while the Tools for Economic Development subcommittee is examining programs and policies that can build on the needs of all aspects of rural Saskatchewan.

All rural municipalities, towns and villages, as well as numerous other businesses and organizations are being asked to complete a survey. The survey is a joint effort of two of ACRE's subcommittees.

"We're asking rural leaders to tell us what they see as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in their communities and businesses, as well as any suggestions for strategies and actions that will help support them," says Dick DeRyk, chair of the Rural Service Sector subcommittee.

"Rural communities are the foundation of rural Saskatchewan," adds Linda Pipke, chair of the Community in Evolution subcommittee. "We're developing a picture of what communities will look like in 10 to 15 years and developing strategies that will ensure strong, sustainable rural communities."
